Movie Special Effect

A Simi Valley based movie special effects company confronted a difficult problem in developing a scene for an upcoming motion picture. The scene required the simulation of a submarine firing a torpedo from bow torpedo tubes. The simulation and final filming would all take place in a swimming pool.

The submarine's forward speed of 20 knots needed to be simulated without moving the sub mockup, so bubbles released by the torpedo would flow backward, rather than straight up. Placing the sub at an angle so bubbles could rise from the tubes could not be done because the bubbles must begin to rise naturally as they passed by the sub, which would require moving the mockup.
