Pumping Solution at Hydropower Facility Saved Customer Time and Money


Every 10 years the LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) performs routine maintenance on a hydropower facility bay. The most recent maintenance project required a temporary system that would dewater the bay within 48 hours so that other maintenance tasks could be carried out within a very tight schedule. No delays would be allowed due to the limited time incoming lake-water could be diverted into a neighboring lake; any deviation from the schedule could result in major issues, including flooding.


Rain for Rent designed and delivered a multi-phase dewatering system that was installed by the facility’s Union crew. Water was pumped up from the bay and out of the lake with pumps suitable for cold, muddy conditions. The silty sand slurry was also pumped up to the edge of the lake, which eliminated the need for dozers and dump trucks to remove the sand from the bottom of the bay.


  • To mitigate the risk of working next to a 78-foot drop into the bay while unloading and loading, Rain for Rent held multiple JSA’s and used spotters.
  • Light towers were provided to help the job safely continue uninterrupted, 24/7.
  • Eliminating the need for heavy equipment in the clean-out phase saved the customer time and money.
