Gold Mine Sees Big Benefits from Pump Systems with Co-Pilot/Pump Controllers at TSF & Pits

BACKGROUND

North Carolina, USA – From 2016 to present (eight years), Rain for Rent, Charlotte, NC has been dedicated to supporting an esteemed gold-mining customer through the provision of site-water management services including open-pit dewatering and pump operations management at the tailing storage facility (TSF).  As TSFs provide containment for waste material created during mining and refining processes, it is an operational imperative that TSF ponds be closely monitored and efficiently managed. With a 600-acre capacity TSF on site, the mine required around-the-clock staffing to ensure that pumps (consistently pushing water with high PSI measurements) were correctly maintained.

When Rain for Rent initially began designing and installing pumping systems for the mine, nearly 30 (non-stainless steel) pumps were set up throughout the site to dewater pits and transfer water to and from the TSF.  In 2020, Rain for Rent began replacing these pumps with stainless steel XH150c pumps, better suited for the abrasive site conditions of mines and quarries.  Always aiming to improve the customer experience, in 2022, Rain for Rent introduced Pump Controllers (Co-Pilots) to many of the pumps throughout the site. This quickly proved to be extremely beneficial and a game changer for the customer, especially for their TSF operations.

OUTCOME & HIGHLIGHTS

In the past, mines depended on feedback from multiple shifts of on-site staff who realistically couldn’t be at all pump locations at all times to catch a maintenance issue before it became a problem. Now, the remote monitoring capabilities of the Pump Controller (Co-Pilot) provide real-time tracking and communication of important data points like priming issues, fuel levels, and vibration measurements, etc., all presented via an organized dashboard view.

With this data and GPS coordinates, Rain for Rent and customer operations teams can be strategically deployed along efficient routes, prepared with the correct tools and supplies required for preventative maintenance. This has resulted in time, money, and resource savings.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

The customer has been extremely pleased with the pump systems’ performances and Rain for Rent’s ongoing dedication to improving designs and services as site operations and conditions have continuously evolved. They shared that the Co-Pilot is a game-changer, and they look forward to seeing what additional benefits may be discovered with this tool.
