Custom Ballast Pumping System Moves Massive Cranes Hundreds of Miles

Fast-ballast system driven by Rain for Rent pumps compensates for shifts during crane transport.

BACKGROUND

A leading cargo transportation company faced the challenge of moving two large, fully assembled container cranes more than 300 miles. Transport required a fast-acting ballast system to compensate for tidal levels and weight changes as the cranes moved up rivers and oceans and eventually loaded off the barge.

OUTCOME
A system of portable diesel driven pumps provided by Rain for Rent allowed the barge to monitor and adjust ballast on demand and provided the mobility needed to install the massive cranes.

HIGHLIGHTS
Coordination between the cargo transport company and Rain for Rent engineers ensured that the 14 pumps could ballast the barge platform effectively for the transport of the large container cranes. Pumps were started and stopped manually to choreograph water transfer rates into the ballast system.

“The service was excellent and the pumps worked without issue. It was a smooth operation.”

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
The transport company plans to use Rain for Rent in the future for ballasting projects. Matt Mumley, Project Manager for the Cargotec stated, “The service was excellent and the pumps worked without issue. It was a smooth operation.”
